Authority Impersonation
Last reviewed: 2026-01-03
Authority impersonation is a manipulation tactic that leverages perceived power—such as a bank, government agency, employer, or "security department"—to create compliance pressure. It often includes threats of consequences, warnings, or urgent steps that must be taken immediately. Authority impersonation succeeds when people feel they cannot question the request. SAF reframes verification as responsible, normal practice: legitimate institutions will tolerate confirmation through official contact methods.
