Security researchers have identified a disturbing trend of AI-generated phishing campaigns specifically designed to exploit senior citizens. These campaigns use artificial intelligence to analyze publicly available information about elderly targets and craft highly personalized, convincing messages that reference their interests, family members, medical history, and financial situations. Unlike generic phishing emails, these AI-crafted messages are carefully tailored to each recipient. They may reference real family members (gathered from social media), mention specific medical conditions, claim to be from healthcare providers or senior services, or offer solutions to concerns common among elderly individuals such as Medicare, prescription costs, or estate planning. The AARP Fraud Watch Network reports that seniors lost over $3 billion to fraud in 2023, with AI-enabled phishing representing a growing portion of these losses.
